Pretty New Yarn and Two Clapotis

Pretty New Yarn

I’ve made a few purchases lately. First (a few weeks ago) was a copy of No Sheep for You. I’d eyed the book for awhile and finally picked it up. I want to make at least two-thirds of the patterns in the book which I think is a good sign. My first project is likely to be the guy’s sweater (for Matt). He really likes the pattern though not the colors. I’ll have to investigate where I can get hemp yarn online. My LYS sells it but I have a feeling it’s at an inflated price.

The actual yarn purchase was last Friday. It was the annual sale at my LYS plus I had a twenty percent discount due to my birthday (this was just on what wasn’t on sale). For fifty bucks I got nine skeins each of the two yarns below. The green and blue is Classic Elite Flash (100% cotton) and the purple is Berroco Cotton Twist (70% cotton, 30% rayon).

Clapotis

Apparently Clapotis means lapping in French (yes, I actually asked my French professor today). As in “The waves lapped upon the shore.” Interesting.

I now have two in work. The one using the blue Caron is for myself. It’s kinda on hold for awhile because, well, I want to make one for Erin first. Hers is from the Flash that I just got Friday. It’s going to have two less increase repeats than the pattern states though we hopefully be longer in length. This is a gift to her in place of the socks that are very unlikely to ever be completed.

Quick WIP shot of mine before it goes away for awhile. I’m just over halfway done with it. I started it on August 25th so this is progress after two weeks (haven’t work on it since Friday). I’ll pick this up again when Erin’s is done or I get in the mood to work on it. It’s 30″ along the longest edge and 16″ on the shortest edge.

And here’s the one for Erin (dubbed Clapotis Deux in my corny way). I’m using the same needle I was using for mine (Size 7 Addi Turbo).

Birthday Party in 6 Photos

Cake Matt and Joe Steph

Matt Josh Cranium Cards

Yesterday was my 23rd birthday. I had a really great birthday. Slept in, went to a giant sale at Alamitos Bay Yarn Company, met Matt for lunch, blew a 50 dollar gift card at Border’s, then had a party with friends. Much fun spent playing half-drunken Cranium and stuffing ourselves with cake cakes, chicken wings, chips, donuts, and lots more.

Knitting Update

Yeah, it’s been forever. Be kind to me, it was just my birthday.

Frogged Projects:

My First Socks – frogged not because I don’t like the pattern but because I’m not someone God intended to knit socks. The needles are tiny, the yarn even more so. I’m going to try knitting socks again using DK or worsted weight yarn and see how that goes but I’m giving up my size 1 Addi Turbos and set of Susan Bates sock DPNs (anyone want either??).

Circular Baby Blanket – When you knit this, you’re knitting to gradually increase the circumference. Your needle has to be as large as the circumference of the blanket. Far as I know, circular needles only get as long as 47″ which gives you a blanket with a radius of not very much. I did a bind off as is and it’ll become a dish cloth or something. Not sure what I’m going to do with the extra yarn (about 150 yards) but I’ll think of something. Maybe more (this time, square shaped) dishcloths.

Pink Baby Blanket – Just couldn’t find a pattern that worked. Decided it was best to just put it aside for awhile. May wind up using it to make the baby kimono from Mason-Dixon (once I get the book back from the library).

WIPs with no updates:

Evening Bag – Ribbon yarn still drives me crazy plus I’m so used to doing long rows the 25 stitches seem so odd. Feel like I’m turning my work every five minutes. I really want to finish this but I think it’ll require a long car/airplane trip and me not taking a really fun project with me.

Ball Band Dishcloths – Really need to work on these for Matt. These also suffer from having short rows in them (rows of short length, not formal short rows). Will work on these during car/plane trips. Specifically our trip to Yosemite in a few weeks.

WIPs with progress, new yarn, and book purchases will be another entry. I get McDonald’s for breakfast and need to actually get dressed before doing that.

B is for Books, Blue

Books

I love boks. It’s not just because I love words and reading (I’d just get audio books then). I love the feel of the paper, the look of a full bookcase, the illustations on covers, and the heaviness they add to my bag when I travel. Matt and I probably buy fifty books a year (each) and check out twice that many from the local library. We check out books on cooking (for him), crafts (for me), and travel (for both of us) though we tend to buy cookbooks, history books, and crappy suitable-for-airplane-reading material (ok, that’s mostly me on that last one).

Blue

I’ve always been a fan of the color blue but Matt’s to blame for it becoming my obsession. When we first started dating he pointed out I owned a lot of blue shirts. I said it was because I have blue eyes and a blue shirt really makes them pop. Soon he would always point out when something came in blue and I found myself buying more and more blue things.

I have only four blue shirts now but I still prefer to write in blue ink and won a blue journal, car, china, drink cup, and lots more I can’t think of at the moment.

Labor Day Weekend Review

Friday: I didn’t have work so I basically had the day myself to do whatever I wanted. I slept in, went to lunch with Matt, got a haircut, then sat at Famima!! for two hours knitting and using their AC. (Photo of haircut to come later – must pursuade Matt to take one.) In the evening we drove up to the Del Amo Mall for the AC. Found a really neat baking dish there at TJ Maxx and discovered the new outdoor pavillion area (yes, I’m slow – been there twice since it opened).

Saturday: We had no plans until the evening and it was really hot all day. Steph had a booth at a local craft fair so I decided to stop by to say hey and maybe hang out. Three hours later I headed home, having hung out with both her and Alicia and gotten lots and lots of knitting done. Due to the heat (about 96F) Matt and I wandered around Border’s for an hour before meeting up with Jen and Mike at the Greek Festival by the Sea. We ate yummy Greek food and enjoyed the music before heading back to our place and splitting a bottle of wine. I always enjoy hanging out with them.

Sunday: Not nearly as warm of a day as the previous ones but still pretty humid. I slept in very late while Matt went to the weekly farmer’s market. Mostly stayed home and knit though a few excursions to air conditioned locals did occur (Lakewood Mall, Trader Joe’s). Due to the humidity and high levels of caffeine consumption just before bed neither of us slept well at all. Somehow finally got to sleep around six and woke up at nine-thirty mostly rested.

Chocolate Cookies

Monday: After a quick breakfast and lots of being lazy we headed up to the valley to see Amy and family. We weren’t the only ones who stopped by. There must have been twenty people! Most of the time was spent in the pool though we did get out to eat and watch some bad TV. Didn’t mind the 100+ temperatures with an air conditioned house with a pool out back.

And, yes, I did knit. There will be another post on that later.
