Continental

I have many times wondered why in the world I taught myself to knit American style (yarn in right hand) versus Continental (yarn in left hand). I had all of hte instructions for both methods, yet I chose American style ’cause, well, it’s the American way! But now I greatly regret this. I’m all about process improvement and Continental knitting has far less wasted steps than American style does. No wrapping the yarn all the way around a needle, you just pick it up.

So, I’m going to teach myself. Not just watch the videos but really, truly teach myself. I know it’s going to take forever, old habits die hard, but it’s definately not the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I still remember how aggravated I got the first time I ever tried knitting. Lots of holes, big mess.

Here’s my plan: knit lots of dishcloths using some mystery cotton I have. I’ve got three balls of it, so that’s at least three dishcloths. Yeah, they’ll be black but whatever. Some goth type I know will LOVE them (if that’s you – identify yourself!). I’ll be using yarn that had no other purpose and no intended recipient so little pressure other than what I put on myself.

I’ll start tomorrow. Not the sort of thing you begin at 10 pm on a Tuesday after two glasses of wine and 12 hours at school!

(Three cheers to Jerry who will be joining me on this fun adventure – I am really going to need his support!)

About angelanoel

I grew up in South Florida, fell in love with a guy who took me to California, then returned to the East Cost in late 2008. I’m a full-time engineering student constantly yearning for more time to take photos, travel, pet my kitties and, of course, knit.

Continental’s not so bad – I knit it when I’m doing stranded work with two hands, but I generally knit closer to Irish Cottage Knitting, where I hold it in my right hand but flick it around the needle instead of picking it up and wrapping it. I find it to be about as efficient as Continental. Good luck!

Also I like the new layout/background.

I was taught to knit the American style but never really had much interest in it because I was so slow at it. Then last year someone showed me continental knitting and it was so much more appealing. I just practiced for a few hours until I got comfortable with it and its soooo much faster!
