Every two years, when either the winter or summer Olympics rolls around, knitters pick a special project (or two) to knit during the games. Knitting begins promptly at the start of the opening ceremonies and ends at the end of the closing ceremonies. (Never quite understood why everyone must start and end at the actual times and not just whenever those events are replayed in their timezone but that’s besides the point.) The projects selected must stretch the knitter’s ability. Some people start a brand new project (or two or three), some choose to work on WIPs or UFOs. As long as it’s a challenge to you, it counts.
While there’s all sorts of craziness about creating projects in Ravelry with the “ravelympics2010” tag, official events (“Cable Cross Country” and “Mitten Moguls” among them), and even teams sometimes based on countries but often on Ravelry groups – I, as always, do my own, less official version. My list is below and I’ll try to keep you all updated with progress and associated pictures though we all know I often get side-tracked and forget about updates.
Here’s what I hope to get done during the Olympics. Not a long list but any means but it’ll still be a stretch as I’m assuming I’ll be heading back to school again soon (this is my fourth day off due to snow).
- Hat for father-in-law (not yet started)
- Citron shawl (60% or so percent complete, need to weigh remaining yarn to be sure)
- Alison’s sweater (knitting 75% complete, has lots of seaming)
- Jeff’s scarf (50% complete as of right now so may already be done by opening ceremonies)
